Naturally occurring penicillinase plasmids in Staphylococcus aureus.
A series of plasmids harbored by naturally occurring penicillin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus were surveyed with a view toward exploring the variability in plasmid-linked marker patterns. Plasmids were transduced from their natural hosts to either of two plasmid-negative laboratory strains by selection for cadmium resistance, and the transductants were tested for all other markers ...
متن کاملStability of penicillinase plasmids in Staphylococcus aureus.
The isolation of mutants of Staphylococcus aureus that are affected in the stability of penicillinase plasmids is described. One mutation is plasmid borne and results in nonreplication of the plasmid at 42 C. A second type of mutation is host-borne and gives rise to instability of both mcr(I) and mcr(II) penicillinase plasmids but not a tetracycline-resistant plasmid.
متن کاملPhenotypic suppression of methicillin resistance in Staphylococcus aureus by mutant noninducible penicillinase plasmids.
Methicillin (intrinsic) resistance of Staphylococcus aureus was suppressed almost completely by regulatory gene (penI(1)) mutations of penicillinase plasmids that made penicillinase production strictly noninducible. Methicillin resistance was restored by secondary regulatory gene mutations that altered the noninducible phenotype or by complementation with a compatible plasmid that did not bear ...
متن کاملRelationships between cotransducible plasmids in Staphylococcus aureus.
Cotransduction of two or even three plasmids was observed when a Staphylococcus aureus strain, carrying five distinct, compatible plasmids, was used as donor. An active host recombination system did not seem to be indispensable for plasmid cotransduction, since RecA+ and RecA- donors gave similar cotransduction frequencies. Analysis of plasmids carried by cotransductant clones demonstrated that...
متن کاملCommon R-plasmids in Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis during a nosocomial Staphylococcus aureus outbreak.
During a 7-month period in 1978 to 1979, 31 patients and personnel at a Kentucky hospital were colonized or infected with a Staphylococcus aureus strain resistant to clindamycin, erythromycin, gentamicin, methicillin, penicillin, and tetracycline. S. epidermidis with similar antibiotic resistance patterns had been isolated in this hospital in the year before the S. aureus outbreak. A 32-megadal...
